Refreshing spin in wedge category

4.0 - The golf equipment industry is highly competitive. Companies are constantly coming up with new technologies in an attempt to gain an edge on their competitors. We've seen incredible technological leaps in woods, irons, hybrids and putters but wedges have remained a bit stagnant. Solus Golf set out to bring new technology to wedges and their RD 4.1 wedge has been billed as the "most technologically advanced wedge in the world".

We're all familiar with a "standard" wedge design so let's focus on what makes the Solus wedge different...

-The RD 4.1 features a unique sole design. The "Crescent Cut Sole Contour" lowers the leading edge and makes the club better on "thin" shots. It also helps change the bounce depending on the shot. Most golfers play at a variety of courses and see a variety of course conditions. This sole design makes the Solus wedge a useful tool no matter where the golfer is playing.

-Most wedges on the market today are blades. This design puts more weight behind the face... allowing solid ball strikers the opportunity to do more with the golf ball. The Solus wedge has a cavity back design. This moves more weight to the perimeter of the head and makes the club perform better on miss hits. Unfortunately we can't all hit the middle of the face every time...

-Solus has reduced the offset on this wedge. Most wedges on the market today feature some offset that makes it harder to open the club up. The reduced offset makes the club more playable in different situations and also helps reduce pulls to the left.

-The milled face isn't a totally new idea but Solus has one of the better ones on the market. Milling the face helps create more spin.

The Solus wedge comes stock with a True Temper "Q-Shaft" and a Winn V-17 grip.

It's refreshing to see some new technology and ideas enter the wedge market. Golfers are eager to load their bags with the best technology available and many are turning to Solus wedges to help bolster their short games.

Despite it's infomercial beginnings, the Solus wedge has made real strides with amateur and professional players alike. Golfers love the look and feel of the Solus. The sole technology makes the club very effective in a variety of turf and sand conditions. The milled face really helps with control and most players rank it among the best in the "Spin" category. Never been able to spin a wedge? You might want to have a look at this one!

One of the biggest knocks on the Solus has more to do with cosmetics than performance. Some players complain that the medallion on the back looks cheap and others wish the club was available in chrome as well as black. Performance is more important than looks but golfers know that confidence lies in a club that visually appeals to them. I hear some complaints that the grip is too soft but it's a fairly minor thing to change. The stock shaft works well for most golfers although some better players opt to replace it with an upgrade.

The Solus is a very versatile wedge and it is a great choice for golfers of all skills and abilities. The unique sole design makes the club a useful tool in almost any lie and the milled face really helps with spin. Solus offers the RD Series 4.1 in a variety of lofts and golfers shouldn't have a problem finding one that will fit into their bags. I think it's safe to say that the "traditional" wedge will always have a place in golf but Solus has shown us that a bit of technology never hurts!
