The Golf Book
If you love golf – and you probably do if you're reading this – then you have to see the recently-published Sports Illustrated book on golf. “The Golf Book” will take you down memory lane through countless wonderful photographs, while enlightening your knowledge of the game with its historical perspectives.
But it’s the photographs that dominate this heavyweight tome. Of the astounding 293 photos in the book, 164 have never before been seen on the pages of SI.
“This wonderful book has history, beauty, joy, drama, art, and a lesson at every turn, exactly the same as the game itself. That’s why they called it “The Golf Book: and not “A Golf Book,” says Phil Mickelson.
Divided by eras, “The Golf Book” showcases the game’s greatest players, performances and vistas. You’ll find photos of the legends, including Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Nancy Lopez, Byron Nelson, San Snead and many more.
These icons are captured in singular moments on the world’s most beautiful greens. From the Scottish hills of St. Andrews to the stunning sunsets of Pebble Beach.
Some of these memorable photos include classic images, such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra clowning around on a golf course; W.C. Fields using his driver as a fishing rod; Fidel Castro watching Che Guevara line up a putt shortly after the two revolutionaries conquered Cuba in 1959; President Richard Nixon proudly displaying the ball he used to ace Bel-Air Country Club’s third hole; Captain Jason Conroy of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division practicing his swing while stationed in Iraq; the Three Stooges clowning for the camera in Hollywood and an unforgettable photo of Laura Baugh.
Included with these rare photos, artifacts and memorabilia are sidebars that highlight fascinating facts and shining milestones from each time period, as well as a special gatefold that assembles the 20 Greatest Golfers of All Time – led by Jack Nicklaus.
This list was commissioned by Sports Illustrated and comprised of experts from the PGA, USGA, LPGA, Golf Magazine, Golf Plus, Golf.com, as well as their own staff of esteemed writers and editors.
In addition to the fabulous photos, The Golf Book contains a who’s-who list of award-winning writers. Stories, articles, and essays are written by Frank Deford, George Plimpton, Jim Murray, Gary Smith and others.
A few samples of this vivid prose include Dan Jenkins’ “Fun Times in the Thirties,” which summarizes golf’s rat pack of that era; Gerald Holland delivering a lively portrait of Slammin’ Sam Snead in “Sam Snead and the Serpent”; “More Fun than a Barrel of Monty’s,” Steve Rushin’s humorous take on his jaunt to Scotland for the British Open; Rick Reilly’s tribute to the late Harvey Penick in “For You, Harvey.”
After perusing the book, 2003 U.S. Open Champion Jim Furyk said, “I think it’s a great book just to have out there on the coffee table, to have out there for friends and family and people to see because it’s got a lot of incredible pictures in it. Every magazine that you open up, in the front, you have one or two great pictures of the week or the month, and kind of like a fitting moment, and this is a collection of all of those. It’s a great book for golf fans, and I think sports fans as well.”
“The Golf Book” retails for $29.95 and is available at major book stores and online retailers.
